2018 Season
May 5, 2018 - A new season
It’s been a long and exciting winter for me. For those that haven’t followed along, I moved to the USA in October, attended the Nascar Awards Banquet in Charlotte, North Carolina to receive my Ontario Provincial Rookie of the Year award, spent a lot of time with Speed51.com, many thanks to Bob Dillner for the experience, travelled to many different race tracks, attended the Barrett Jackson Auction in Arizona, met so many amazing people and truly had the time of my life. Coming back to Canada in April was a reality check, but I needed to come home to race and work to make more money so I can go back to the USA in the fall.
May 5th was opening night at Sunset Speedway, since last weekend was cancelled, and the day actually started out well. My car was awesome in practice, everything about it felt great. Went out for second practice, car was still great……until we got back to our pit stall and it was leaking oil. We cleaned up the oil, Dad, Paul Genioli Sr and Jo Lawrence took a look at the car and it appeared that the seal was leaking. Nic Montanari mentioned that John Stefko, from Stefko Racing Engines, was heading up to the track this evening, so I called him and said he would come up to fix it.
We had to miss the first feature of the night, which was a really good feature, clean and green from start to finish. Congrats to Danny Benedict on the first feature win of the season.
John came and got the motor fixed in time for us to run the second feature of the night. I started 17th in the feature. The first feature, was clean, but the same cannot be said for the second feature. One lap two or three, the caution would come out as the 41 and 48 were involved somehow, I didn’t see it. The 41 broke something as he drove the car in reverse down pit road. The 48 would go to the back and I would restart in 15th.
Going back to green, I assume the 10 got into the back Billy Zardo, running in 3rd, and send him spinning, bringing out another caution. After this caution, I would restart in 12th. Lap 12 would see the next caution. I have no idea what happened, but ahead of me the 25 would end up sideways on the back stretch, with the 39 involved as well, and the 14 would end up hitting the 25 car and got air borne.
I restarted the race in 9th and got up to 8th and ran there for a bit with some hard side by side laps with Dwayne Baker and Gord Shepherd, eventually I would lose my position to them and move back to 10th before the before the 98 brought out the next caution when he spun out of corner two.
On lap 28, it would appear that the 10 car got into the back of the 31, sending him around and bringing out yet another caution. The 10 would go to the back, the 31 would bump him under caution, causing him to be back flagged and upon being black flagged, he decided to go in a blaze of glory and spun the 10 car out before existing the track.
We got back to racing and were going through the corner when the 48 snapped sideways, sending him into the side of my car, sending me around, where I would get hit by the 4 car, which then turned my car the other way….my throttle stuck and I headed toward the outside wall. Watch the video highlights of the wreck below.
I would be done for the night. I have some damage to the car, but appears to be mostly cosmetic. We’ll be back stronger than ever, and more determined next week. I had a good top 10 run and couldn’t be happier with the car. It was a very “Bowman Gray” type of race for sure.
See you next week

60 Lap Feature at Sunset
Well it certainly wasn’t the best car I’ve ever driven. The car was back to normal on Wednesday at practice. We didn’t touch it after that. Brought it to the track today and we had to make a couple adjustments during practice and I just couldn’t get the “tight” out of it.
We had a 60 lap feature tonight instead of twin 35 laps, so instead of doing regular qualifying, we had a heat race. I started on the pole with the 54 on the outside so I expected to fall back. I didn’t expect to fall back as far as I did though. There was a caution on lap 1 when the 57 and 46 would get together. At this point I had already fallen back to 3rd, so I would restart here. The car was so great last weekend and Wednesday, so I thought I’d have a good heat race. Wasn’t meant to be. We ending up falling back to 8th place. This poor finish would have us starting 15th in the feature.
We made a few adjustments for the feature but really didn’t know what to expect. The car was not very good at the beginning of the race and we were in a group of four for about 7-8 laps where I lost a few spots. There was an early caution on lap 10, when the 10 car had a flat tire and we would restart in 15th.
By lap 23 I had fallen back to 2nd last but as a positive, the car was starting to feel better. We ran a long time under green, I made a move down the front straight to get under the 14 and 4 car, I was inside the 14 going into turn 1 when we made contact and I was pushed down into the grass but I didn’t back out of it, made the pass on both cars coming out of 2 and picked up two spots.
Lap 56 would see the final caution of the night when the 48 and 24 would make contact, sending them both around. I would line up for the restart in 12th, but with some very fast cars right behind me. I wasn’t sure how the restart would go, but it was clean. I fell back to 13th on the restart and then would be passed by the 24 on the final lap. In the end, it wasn’t the result we were hoping for, but the car came home in one piece and it was a little better in the end.
We won’t be racing next weekend. Taking a week off as I am flying to North Carolina tomorrow morning. Got some exciting things happening there next week which I’ll share as soon as I can. I’ll be back home May 25th in time for the race that weekend.
Bowman Gray Heads North of the border this Weekend
It’s seems we had some Bowman Gray action at a few race tracks across Ontario this weekend. 😂
To start the weekend, we headed out to Ohsweken Speedway to take in some dirt racing and see Kenny Schrader in action. It was a great, yet dirty, night of racing.
Saturday would see our team back in action at Sunset Speedway. In practice, we had to make sure the car was right for me after Dad made some changes last week while he was testing it. It felt good in practice so we only ran a handful of laps. Off to qualifying, which I still continue to struggle with. The car has more speed than this but clearly I am better with other cars around me, making me work harder.
In the first feature, I would start in 12th. On lap 7 of the race, the 90 would bring out the caution for a flat tire. Still running in 12th we’d restart the race only to have the 90 spin the 24 car on the restart and both would restart at the back. We’d try the restart again.
On lap 16, the 46 car would go around coming out of two bringing out the next caution. At this time, I went pit side as we had noticed smoke coming out of the car and we were losing the power steering. I didn’t have any crew in the infield this week (like most weeks) so I pulled up to the NG Motorsports crew for some help, however the 24 car pulled in right behind me. A few of the NG Motorsports crew stayed with my car along with help from Rino Montanari. They added power steering fluid and we just barely got out before the race went green again. I came out of the pits just before the leaders, but would eventually be over taken by the lead pack by lap 19. The car was okay, but obviously this was a temporary fix, so on lap 26 I decided to pull into the infield and park it for the rest of the feature.
We set to work on getting the car fixed for the second feature. With the help of my sponsor, Great Lakes Concrete, NG Motorsports, they loaned me a power steering pump to get back out on the track for feature two. Thanks to all that helped me out for the first feature. It’s appreciated as always.
For feature 2, we would start 14th. The race would be clean and green up to lap 19. We were trapped behind two cars side by side for most of these laps. The 41 car would spin entering corner 1, no idea if he had help or not, but the 10 would come down and collect the 54 car, bringing out the caution.
This was unfortunate for those involved, but good for me as it staggered the cars ahead of me that had been battling side by side for half the race.
On the restart, we would get by a couple cars and move up to 10th place were we would spend about 10 laps. I was attempting to pass the 9th place car and finally made the pass with a couple laps to go racing side by side to the checkers.
Overall, we were happy with the race result and how the car performed. Tough to come from the back in this field so every position you can make up is a victory.
It was like Bowman Gray came north of the border this weekend with tempers flaring at Sunset, people wrecking other drivers after the checkers at Peterborough and others upset with a lapped car being spun by the leader at Flamboro. No question about it, racing is a passionate sport with drama at every track on any given weekend. Car felt good tonight and I am looking forward to next weekend.
Two Top Tens!
For having done no work on the car this week as I was busy working and Dad was out of town on business, the car was a lot better than I thought it would be. We did one practice session and left the car as it was. Qualifying still continues to elude me. I need other cars around me to make me push myself harder. I managed to qualify 10th for the first feature.
The first feature was pretty much line up and go as it went green to checkers. On lap 26, I’d make an inside pass on the 69 car and that was it for this feature as we rolled across the finish line in 9th.
For the second feature we would line up in 7th. This race was to have a number of cautions and a bit more action. We had some really fast cars starting behind us so I was confident that there would be some three wide action early in the race, and I wasn’t wrong. With the 24 on the bottom, me in the middle and the 10 on the outside, it would be tight into corner 1. I would get into the 10 car and get him out of shape a bit but he easily collected it and continued. I fell back to 12th by lap 12.
On lap 11, the 3 and 57 would tangle on the front stretch sending the 57 around and bringing out the caution. 57 would retire to the infield for the night. We were able to slow and stop to avoid the wreck, the 9 would spin to avoid and the 4 would attempt to go to the outside, getting some minor damage which would result in the 4 heading into the pits to have the car checked. We would restart in 8th and by lap 13 we would move up to 7th. On lap 16 the 9 would bring out the final caution of the night. We would restart 7th and finish in 7th.
Special thanks for all the help that I received at the race track. Last night, Danny Benedict’s crew helped us out taking our stuff to the infield. Appreciate your help, you guys are amazing. And thanks to my sponsor Great Lakes Concrete, Nick Goetz Motorsports, for always supporting me. Nick is one of the most amazing competitors. He sponsors people who are his competitors, he sponsors a series in 2018 that runs between Sunset Speedway and Sauble Speedway and his crew and Nick are always willing to help if you need advice or a spare part to get you back in the race, or even his car ☺️.
Thank you to my other sponsors as well for everything you do to support me. Mobil 1, SE Telecom, Avaya, Radical Rods and Restorations, Epic Racewear, Gear Head Parts, The Mortgage Station, Wix and JT and Company.
Two Top 5 finishes - not meant to be
Be sure to join us next weekend at Sunset Speedway, June 23/18 for fan appreciation night.
First off, we are extremely happy to announce that Global Simcoe Paving is back as a sponsor with us for the 2018 Season! Thank you for coming on board again this year.
We had a great weekend of racing. Originally I wasn’t planning to race this weekend, again, as I thought I would be working, but it turned out I was available, and I am glad I was! Rogers TV was awesome as I contacted them Friday to let them know I was going to be available to race after all and they made themselves available to come film.
We hadn’t worked on the car all week as we weren’t planning to race so Dad and I did some work to the car Saturday morning and headed up to the track.
We were fast out of the box. We went out for practice, ran two laps and pulled the car in and that was the only practice we did. As we all know, I never qualify well, but Saturday would be my best qualifying ever as I would qualify 6th.
In this field, where the cars are all so close, qualifying is all important and it has always eluded me. This was also a huge race for me as it was the first time I would race a late model in the same race as my Dad. My Dad hasn’t raced late model since 2004!! He was running NG Motorsports back up car. He qualified the car 9th, but he wasn’t in the race to win, just turn some laps in the car so although he qualified 9th he started in the scratch position.
We would line up 6th in the feature and we had a great run. We all just basically fell into line and we were running 6th when my Dad spun and brought out the caution on lap 20. I’d line back up in 6th position and battle with the 25 car for a number of laps before completing the pass on him on the outside on lap 25. From here I set my sights on the 57 car for 4th place.
By lap 29, I was under the 57 when we would catch a lapped car and I was pinched down behind the lapped car and unable to complete the pass for 4th, falling back into 5th place. I prepared to make another run at the 57 for fourth place but this would be cut short however when the 25 would get into the corner too hard and turned me into the infield, bringing out the caution at lap 31. Frustrating to be spun attempting to get my first top five finish in the late model, but to the back of the field we would both go for the restart with just four laps to go.
The only positive to being sent to the back was that I was able to do some side by side racing with my Dad as I came back through the field to end up finishing the race in 8th. My Dad finished in 10th, but I did wave at him on the way by!! 😂
It was a great Father’s Day experience to be able to be in the same race as my Dad. We raced once in mini stock against each other as well, and let me just say, that I passed him in that race too!!
For the second feature we would start on the pole. It was my first feature race pole start of the year and I still find it nerve wracking to start the race. I did get a good start and had a great side by side battle with the 3 car for four laps with him just ahead at the line when the caution came out on lap 4. From what I saw on the race track, the 57 was spun and the 10 went to the back so I assume he was the reason for the spin. The 9 car went pit side but returned to the race before green.
I restarted in second, however the 3 car took the outside. The 3 would get by on the outside and take the lead and I fell I to second. I’d run in 2nd until lap 20 when the 24 would catch me and pull to the outside to battle for 2nd. We had a great side by side battle for five laps before Nick completed the pass putting me back into 3rd and in a battle again, this time with the 10 car. It would be a short battle though as the 10 got by me by lap 26 putting me into 4th.
The 10 would go on to win the race and I would finish in 4th, picking up my first top five in my late model.
It was a fantastic night and I can’t thank all my crew, family, friends and supporters enough. Thanks to the owners and staff at Sunset Speedway for making it all possible. As always, none of this would be possible without my sponsors Mobil 1, SE Telecom, Avaya, Epic Racewear, Radical Restorations, Gear Head Parts, Great Lakes Concrete, The Mortgage Station, JT & Company, Global Simcoe Paving and Wix.
The car is running great and we are excited for next week.
Fan Appreciation and 2 35 lap features
I had the pleasure of having my representative from Mobil 1 at the track for the weekend. It’s always a pleasure to have David and Margaret Swain come support me.
In practice the car felt great so we decided to sit out the second round and watch to see how the competition looked today.
I had another good qualifying run and I qualified the car in 7th. My qualifying has improved, which is amazing as I’ve always struggled with this.
We would start straight up, fast cars to the front, which tends to lead to a real line up and go type of race, without a lot of passing. The 4 car would hit pit road and wouldn’t take the green. The inside lane wouldn’t be the fast lane in this feature and I’d fall back to 9th pretty quickly.
The first and only caution would come out on lap 28 when the 54 and 24x were lapping the 43 car. The 43 would get into the 24x, which in turn would push the 24x into the 54, causing the 54 to go around. 54 and 24x would go to the back.
I’d restart in 7th for the final 7 lap shoot out and it went green and I’d end up finishing the race in 7th with the win going to the 24 of Nick Goetz.
For the second feature, I drew the starting position of P8. It was another clean and green feature race. I fell back to 9th on lap 11. Lap 20, going into corner one, my car snapped sideways, so aggressively, I thought someone had hit me, which they didn’t, but I was able to gather the car up without losing a position. I was closing on the group ahead of me, but was not able to advance my position above 9th. Another solid night at that track and we are happy with the results.Shout out to rookie Nic Montanari on his solid 6th place finish last night.
I am looking forward to working with Shiann Wilman this week as a driving instructor as we get her ready for her mini stock debut race.
Happy Canada Day - It was a hot one
From start to finished it was an extremely difficult day. It was about 102 degrees with the humidity yesterday and God only knows how hot it was in the car. The pits were dead most of the day with most people not doing much to their cars as it was simply too hot.
We took the car out for about 5 laps of practice during the heat of the day and left it at that. My car felt good.
We time trialed a little later due to the weather, hoping it would start to cool down, but it didn’t. I time trialed 10th which put me in the draw and I pulled 3rd for the start of the race.
In the opening laps of the 60 lap feature, the air pressures didn’t come up as quickly as I needed them too and I fell back to 7th by lap 2. It wouldn’t get better as I continued to fall and by lap 16, I was in 10th. The car started to feel better and I set out to start making my way back up the field.
I made a clean pass on a car at lap 25, moving up to 9th, and unfortunately the 9 car would spin me going into corner 1 at lap 30. There was no damage to my car so I didn’t have to pit, but we would bring out the first caution of the night and restart at the tail end of the field.
By lap 46 we would be back up the 9th place. At this point in time things weren’t going great for me. My brakes were pretty much gone and as a driver, so was I. It took a lot to just focus on the race and ride it out until the end. I was just out there turning laps and trying to keep it clean and focus on finishing. The heat was getting to me in the worst way.
On lap 57, the 24 would spin bringing out the final caution of the night. It was beyond hot and at this point I thought I was going to throw up.
On the final restart I lined up 8th and I don’t know what happened on the while flag lap but the 57 was all over the track and everyone checked up and two cars passed me on the outside putting me into 10th for the finish.
After the race, I was sick from the heat and it took a number of cold towels and ice to bring my body temperature back down. Rough night.
Back at it next weekend.
The Mortgage Station VIP Night
The day started out well. Changed some tires and brakes. We missed first practice but made it out for second and the car felt good. Went out for qualifying and I put down my fastest lap time to date of a 14.806, so clearly I am getting better at qualifying. We’d qualify 8th.
For the feature, we would end up staring P7 as the car that took the pole had to pull into the pits after qualifying. We started P7 and held that spot until about lap 10 when we would start to battle with the 9 for 6th.
I am not sure what happened to the 3 car but I did see that he spun in corner two and took a hard hit from the 25 who had no where to go. The 4 just got by with some minor body damage. Unfortunately I heard that the 3 car may not be back this season but I hope that changes.
Restarted 7th, moved up to 6th. I was having a brake issue and they were smoking. Battled for 20 laps door to door, back and forth, changing positions, with the 9 car. He was running a high line and I was on the inside, but with the brake issue, I wasn’t able to set up in the corner the way I needed to in order to make the pass work. I would end up with a 6th place finish in the first of two features.
For the second feature, I would start in P2. With the brake issue fixed and the car running well, I was confident we would have a good finish. With the 10 car on the pole, my best shot was to try to find a spot behind him. I had a good start and was able to dip to the low line and fall in behind the 10.
I would run in second place for about 12 laps when suddenly the car was not handling well, I started to drop through the field and on lap 20, I pulled it to the infield. The car was bouncing off the track and wore out part of my side skirt, no caution had come out in 8 laps. I didn’t want to bring out a caution as it was a good race and I didn’t want to change the potential outcome of the race with a caution. So I parked the car for the night with a right front flat tire.
It was a great night. My car ran well, we had a good finish in the first feature and a strong run in the second feature, running second when we got the flat.
My sponsor, The Mortgage Station, was on hand for their VIP event. Always one of my favourite nights of the year. We are off next week, July 14th and then I will not be racing July 21st as I will be in New Hampshire. I haven’t decided if I will have a substitute driver or not have it at the race track at all.
Back at it - 60 lap feature
I missed the night of racing on July 21, 2018 as I was working in New Hampshire for the Nascar Races.
Practice didn’t start out well for us. I had a brake issue again in first practice. We worked on this, missed second practice but they had a 3rd practice session this week, thankfully, because I pulled on the track, did one lap and broke an axle. The team set about fixing the car, many thanks to all those that helped me out. Brandon Passer, Nic Montanari, Mike Wilkinson for offering to go home for an axle, Connor & Rob James for asking Darlene to bring parts from home as she was just on her way to the track, Gord Shepherd for loaning me an axle and Jo Lawrence for helping to put the car back together. I can’t say enough about these people that I race with, the support and help they offer, it truly is incredible. Thank you to each and every one of them.
This weekend was a great race weekend for our team, unfortunately we didn’t get the finish in the feature that we wanted. This week was unlike our regular weeks because we ran one 60 lap race, and two heats which were 10 laps each.
In the first heat we started 5th after pulling a 26. We would have a caution on lap 2 when contact between the 57 and 4 car would send the 4 car spinning. I would restart third and finish fourth.
In the second heat I would start on the outside pole and I would lead the pack for about 5 laps. I was racing side by side with the 24 car, when my car became tight in the centre of the corner and I would fall back to the fourth position. The 24 car was the fast qualifier and that would make him draw for the invert, he drew 7 and that would put me on the pole. We ran green for about 31 laps and by then I had fallen back to about 6th, and the top 6 had a comfortable lead on the rest of the pack. After the caution we would line up, and I would restart 6th. Lap 36 the caution would come out again for the 9 car who spun out, and collected the 98. I would restart 6th again.
On lap 38 I wasn’t quite clear and I came down and just came across the nose of the 46 car. I almost saved the car but I couldn’t quite complete the save. Thankfully the whole field had slowed up and there was no contact made. I would be the sole car sent to the rear of the field for the restart.
Lap 41 would come around and the 46 had a steering problem which caused him to collect the 4 and the 25 in corner 3. The 4 and the 25 would finish the race but the 46 would be towed back to the pits. At this point I had made my way back to 8th for the restart.
After chasing the car for about half of the race I would have one hard hit with the right side into the wall which would mangle the right front rim causing an ill handling car, leading to myself pulling off the race track into the pits on lap 52. I would finish tenth overall. On to the next week! August 4th we will be back to twin 35 lap features.
August 4, 2018
My car has been running great lately, but I guess there is always room for improvement. We worked on the car, with the help of Danny Benedict, early Saturday morning, made some changes and I worked with Danny during practice on the line I was running to see if we could get some better results out of the car. Some changes I liked, some not as much, but overall, it was helpful and I appreciate Danny helping us this weekend.
I would post my highest qualifying spot to date. My qualifying attempts have improved as it was never something I was good at, but as a team we are getting better, and I was able to qualify the car in 5th position this weekend. One car would go scratch, so I would end up starting the first feature in 4th.
Starting 4th at the drop of the green, I would run outside for a few laps before losing a spot to the 25 car and falling to 5th before I could duck down to the inside lane. We would run nose to tail for about 10 laps before the 9 car made substantial contact with the wall bringing out the caution. The remainder of the race would go caution free and we would end up finishing the race in 5th. Pretty happy with that result considering 3 of the 4 in front of me as in top 10 Nationally for Division 1 and they are some of the best drivers in North America.
In the second feature, with the invert, I would start on the pole. The 3 car would be on the outside pole and he would get by me on the start to take the lead, dropping me back to second. The 3 car and I had a pretty decent lead and we would run that way until lap 14 when the 24 spun in corner 1 bringing out the caution. On the restart, I would fall back to 3rd when the 54 car would get around me. The caution would come out again when the 24 and 4 would go around. Another car had got around me, so on this restart I would be 4th.
The car was loose and getting worse as the race continued. We went green to the end, but I would end up falling back to 7th for the finish.
It was a good day over all, my best qualifying position, another top 5 and a top 10, so overall a good night.
We are off next week and back racing on August 18, 2018 for another 60 lap feature, as well as fan appreciation night. See you there!!
August 18, 2018 - Not the end of the season we wanted
Not the ending we were looking for – view video here
We have a great car on the weekend. Did some work to the car during the week, felt amazing in practice and set my fastest qualifying time to date, which had me in the 6th qualifying spot for the first feature, and we hoped for, and expected, a good finish.
Unfortunately it was not meant to be. On the opening lap of the feature, the car inside of me took me high up the track coming to the green flag to start the race, our rear tires locked and I would be put up into the outside wall. This would be the end of the race, the end of the night and the end of our 2018 season unfortunately. (See video below)
The car can and will be fixed, however, with my Dad away for business in Vancouver all week, there just wasn’t the time or manpower to get the job done and get the car out for Championship weekend, and the car will not be racing the Velocity weekend either.
Not the way that we wanted our season to end.
Overall, we had a great season, as a team and as a driver, we accomplished everything we set out to do and we improved greatly.
We can’t do this without our amazing sponsors, I appreciate my sponsors and everything they do for me, that allows me to be able to race. Much appreciation and thanks go out to:
Mobil 1, SE Telecom, Avaya Inc, Radical Restorations, Gear Head.com, Paul Quail Transport, Global Simcoe Paving, The Mortgage Station, Great Lakes Concrete, Epic Racewear, JT & Company and Motorsport Alley.
Many thanks to Rogers TV for continuing Life in the Fast Lane for the second season. We have a lot of fun doing the show and appreciate that they do this.
At this moment, we are not 100% sure what the plans are for the 2019 season. Everything depends on funding so we will talk with our sponsors over the winter and see what we can arrange to do for 2019. Thank you everyone for your support and help in 2018, we look forward to seeing what we can arrange for 2019.
